Today at an antique shop in Asakusa I discovered three photographic treasures in a box full of old snapshot prints- 100 yen each. The first one is in Asakusa in the 1960’s or 70’s, I think. The second two are a few decades older. The third is in Hibiya park looking northeast towards Ginza/Yurakucho.
It’s important to never forget that, as Friedlander once noted“the pleasures of good photographs are the pleasures of good photographs”. I’m personally forever interested in photographs like these that work on their own personal terms, regardless whether we know or can ever know the people pictured in them. For me the best photographs are those that are simply byproducts of individuals and actions or events shared between them.
