Araki-cho is a gem tucked away in Shinjuku-ku- it’s a quiet district of winding paths and stone staircases. While it once was one of Tokyo’s major geisha districts, local entertainment now takes place in any of the 300+ tiny dining and drinking establishments that line its streets. Asahi Graph magazine commissioned Nobuyoshi Araki to photograph this aptly named part of town for their June, 1999 issue.
