80s Shinjuku is just that- snaps of this part of Tokyo in that decade through the eyes of photographer Koji Onaka. This exhibition- with many images printed and exhibited for the first time- show a Shinjuku of a different era, a time where the streets had actual grit and zero multi-national chain-store gloss.
Onaka states that in the 1980′s his life was spent in Shinjuku- through the 1980s and into the 1990s Onaka, while still in his twenties, set up a small photo gallery there called Camp. Camp served as a venue for his exhibitions and was a hub of sorts in Tokyo’s Shinjuku-centric photography scene. Looked like an interesting place- as you can see in the second picture, guys like Daido Moriyama, Masahisa Fukase, and Takuma Nakahira would stop by and visit.
