“The camera is our weapon, our tool to put an end to self-expression. Photography is a weapon to threaten blocked sensitivities. I don’t want to see the pictures you take, I want to see the world that your pictures show me.”

- Koichi Kuronuma

——–

Between 1972 to 1977, ten issues of a photography magazine called Chihei (Horizon) were published by a group of photographers in Osaka.

Their magazine was the product of determination and passion- something which left a mark on the Japanese photography community.

After a forty-one year hiatus, the eleventh issue has been published.  The book and accompanying exhibition are comprised all new work by seven photographers who for two months focused on the theme of Osaka itself.

Kuronuma, a Chihei member at the time, laid out the group’s intent in the quote above. His rejection of expression with a lens in favor of raw, straight vision continues to inspire today.
