The second installment of Motohiko Hasui’s diaristic series Personal Matters is up at Quiet Noise arts and break in Setagaya. Hasui is a young photographer who has been making his way ahead in the photographic fashion industry- his commercial work has a knack for retaining a freshness which sets it part from slickly over-produced fashion pictures that seem to be the norm. These pictures, many are second-views of commercial jobs- are moments when the Contax T3 he keeps around his neck comes in handy. It’s the everyday, the personal that’s the content. The matter of the work shown is the presentation of his work as common 4x6 prints not unlike what you get from a 1-hour photo. The prints are fit atop rectangular bases which are edged in metallic tape- reflections from the gallery’s spot lights create auras around each picture. The presentation is fitting for the gallery, a crisp venue with a door which faces and is set a few meters away from the Keio Inokashira line.
This exhibition coincides with the publication of Personal Matters Vol.II by Bemojke press. Echoing in design daily planners, the presentation reinforces the personal and daily aspect of Hasui’s work.
