Who: 野村佐紀子 Sakiko Nomura / website
Where: Quiet Noise arts and break, Daizawa, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo
When: Weekends & holidays between Nov. 10 - Dec. 16, 2018
Sakiko Nomura’s latest exhibition of her intimate, darkly muted photographs fits the crispness of Quiet Noise. Her prints- both traditional silver-gelatin and inkjet- share a quietness that, when placed under glass call to mind daguerreotypes in how the reflection of surrounding light comes into play when encountering the images.
Copies of her book 「愛について」About Love, are available as well. This collection is of her continual photographic work with the male nude- she photographs men the way many men photograph women. The lighting, poses, and supine-ness of her subjects all echo the kind of vulnerability women are often portrayed with- the way she is able to make statements on male beauty without relying on western aggressively macho-masculine ideals is quite interesting, and something that she deserves greater recognition for.
