The Mass, a three-part art gallery on Harajuku’s Cat Street is constructed of two cubes of concrete with floor to ceiling glass windows on top and a longer, larger gallery space that’s just slightly below street level. Their current show is an exhibition of twelve photographic portfolios from Toluca Éditions. For those interested in photography as object, these portfolios, designed by graphic designer Olivier Andreotti, are breathtaking in person. Their rarity- editions under 40, I believe, and prices- (from $9,000 to $29,000 each) make this exhibition an opportunity for art and photography lovers to experience work that they might not normally get to see, up close. Daido Moriyama’s color C-prints alone are worth the trip- the fact that so much else is fascinating to take in makes for a nice afternoon in Harajuku.
