Keiji Sato’s Shinjuku Starlets
Sato presents a selection of photographs that quite literally center on flashy young women of Shinjuku street-nights. These starlets are well suited to the very crisp and particular way in which a digital camera dryly renders the glow of the night. But instead of going for mere graphical impact, Sato remains at a standard distance which to me presents these young women as not simply a concept or voyeuristic image candy- but rather an opportunity to perhaps see through the cracks in the facade these women create through fashion and hair styling products- a chance to ponder their position in a wider picture.
