August 2013 Nippon Camera Tokyo Camera Style feature
Photographer’s Bar Kodoji, Golden-gai, Shinjuku
The lady behind the counter is my friend Aya Okabe. I wrote about her photography a few years ago for an article on Japan Exposures. This was my first time to Kodoji and my second or so to Golden-gai in Shinjuku. My editor wrote the headline “お酒飲めない*けど・・・居酒屋カメラスタイル!” which in English says “Even though I can’t* drink… Izakaya camera style! ”.
Kodoji is well known as a former haunt of The Greats of Japanese photography. The Golden-gai district it sits in has become a tourist destination so if you’d prefer a quieter old-school night-town check out the nearby Araki-cho district in Yotsuya.

*the editor wrote 飲めない, “I can’t drink”, even though it should have been 飲まない, “I don’t drink”. For the price of a drink I’d rather have a roll of film. A lot more can be had out of 36 frames of HP-5 than a beer, anyway. Fact: I easily could go the rest of my life without a drop of alcohol or coffee. Kodak HC-110 for film and Papitol for photo paper are my liquids of choice.
