Re-seen: Tomona Hayashi's latest exhibition Overflow
Tomona messaged me that she had done a re-edit of this show since my visit on the first day of this exhibition. Sure enough most of the images on the wall were different but because she has such a consistent and honest method of seeing the mood remained the same. In addition to the framed prints she also had available for viewing photocopied collections of the work from her previous two exhibitions: Before It Vanishes and Bottle Neck. I don’t know if Japan is the last bastion of truthful, non-conceptual photo work made from a photographic reaction to life itself, but Tokyo’s local artist-run spaces allow for a disregard of what’s Fresh and New in the best way possible.
