The Toyota Municipal Museum of Art in Aichi prefecture is hosting a massive retrospective of Nobuyoshi Araki’s work entitled:

Nobuyoshi Araki: Ojo Shashu: Photography for the Afterlife

The museum’s official website for the exhibition is smartly done and features a generous selection of photography from the exhibit in a very interestingly and moving way. This is perhaps one of the best demonstrations of exhibiting photos on the internet that I’ve encountered. Normally sound effects in an online photo gallery never help the pictures but here they are just perfect:

www.museum.toyota.aichi.jp/ojo_shashu

The entire page is in Japanese but the bottom links at the bottom near the camera icon will show you (left from right) the Top Page, News about the event, Information about the show, and the TV commercial spot for it.  The best part of the experience begins after clicking on the camera icon at the bottom of the page. With your arrow keys you can manually advance through a rather unique edit of his career from the beginning to a very recent set of work done through a shattered lens.

The exhibition is up from April 22 - June 29, 2014 at the Toyota City Municipal Museum of Art.
