Seen: Ariphoto 31
Who: Shinya Arimoto / website
Where: Totem Pole Photo Gallery, Shinjuku
When: April 17 - 29, 2018
The thirty-first exhibition of Shinya Arimoto’s Ariphoto features no less than six photos of people whom Arimoto* has photographed and exhibited before. They’re a kind of re-photographs, in a way. AriRePhoto is a good show.
(*In Japan people are often referred to by their last names. So, out of respect he’s referred to as Arimoto, and not “Shinya”. First-name use in Japan is limited almost exclusively between close friends. Seeing him referred to as “Shinya” (or even worse- referring to Daido Moriyama as just “Daido”) by people online is annoyingly rude but makes the speaker look either overly pretentious or ignorant. Going by last names when referring to Japanese people is the safest way to go.)
